Albright, Madeleine K.

Madeleine K. Albright served as the U.S. Secretary of State from 1997 to 2001. Accomplishments during former Secretary Albright’s tenure included NATO’s successful campaign to reverse ethnic cleansing in Kosovo and the promotion of peace in the Balkans. Prior to her appointment in the State Department, she served as the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations. In 1995, she led the U.S. delegation to the U.N.’s Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China. From 1978 to 1981, Albright was a member of President Carter’s National Security Council and White House staff. She currently serves as the Mortara Distinguished Professor of Diplomacy at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service.

Andrews, Chris

Chris Andrews is Director of Steinhart Aquarium and Chief of Public Programs at the California Academy of Sciences.

"Throughout my career I have been fortunate to visit some wonderful and exotic locations, many of which are now undergoing quite tumultuous change. I have always been especially interested in the diversity of life in the tropics, and the contrast of nature and culture in those areas with what I have seen and experienced elsewhere. I looking forward to this trip in particular, since not only will we receive an appreciation of the spectacular wildlife and wild places in this fascinating part of the world, but also because we will get a glimpse of some old and extremely interesting cultures in a part of the world that is rapidly changing."

Asani, Ali S.

Ali S. Asani is Professor of the Practice of Indo-Muslim Languages and Culture at Harvard University. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, Asani received a PhD from Harvard and now holds a joint appointment in the university’s Near Eastern Languages and Study of Religion Departments. He also serves on the faculty of the Department of Sanskrit and Indian Studies. A specialist in Muslim literature, Asani has written numerous books and journal articles on topics such as Shiism, Sufiism, and Muslim communities in the West. He serves on the editorial advisory board of the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Islamic World and the Encyclopedia of Islam in the United States, and is a member of the board of directors of the American Islamic Congress. Asani has also contributed to a number of post 9/11 efforts to improve understanding of Islam and its role in Muslim societies.

Baker, James

James A. Baker, III served three U.S. presidents in a number of top government positions, including White House Chief of Staff and Secretary of the Treasury under Ronald Reagan and Secretary of State under George H.W. Bush. During his tenure, Baker devoted much of his time to Middle East issues. He was also co-chair of the Iraq Study Group, a bipartisan congressional panel that provided recommendations for U.S. policy vis-à-vis Iraq. Baker was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991. He is the founding chair of the James A. Baker III Institute of Public Policy at Rice University, and author of The Politics of Diplomacy: Revolution, War and Peace, 1989–1992.

Baker, James A.

James A. A longtime White House advisor on policy in the Gulf region, he recently served as co-chair of the Iraq Study Group, a bipartisan congressional panel convened to assess the situation in Iraq and provide recommendations for U.S. policy vis à vis Iraq. In 2006, the group published its findings in a report called The Iraq Study Group Report: The Way Forward—A New Approach. Prior to his role with the Iraq Study Group, Baker was appointed special presidential envoy for President George W. Bush on the issue of Iraqi debt. Bartolomei, Angie

Angie Bartolomei was born in Chicago to immigrant Greek parents. Her determination to master the Greek language brought her to Greece, where she earned her B.A. in Greek social work and Greek Studies at Deree College in Athens. She later earned a Ph.D. from Loyola in Educational and Leadership Policy Studies, and is now a professor in the School of Education at North Park University. She is currently researching Greek identity among Greek Americans and has also studied the Romaniote Jewish community of Greece. During our Aegean Family program, Angie looks forward to discussing a wide range of topics, including the shaping of the Greek character; gods & heroes; sculpture, architecture and the arts of classical Greece; the Olympic ideal; and the contributions of conquerors and leaders in post-classical Greece.

Batey, Barbara

Barbara Batey has been a naturalist and guide in Montana for more than 25 years, and is a seasoned tour manager for World Leaders Travel. While she has nearly 20 years of experience leading tours around the world, her ultimate passion is for her Montana home. She studied biology at Western Washington University, earned a master’s in biochemistry at the University of Washington, and undertook years of study in natural history at the Yellowstone Institute. Barbara’s knowledge of the ecology, flora, fauna, and geology of Montana is encyclopedic (she seems to know every flower and blade of grass that grows there) and she eagerly shares her love of nature. She is also an accomplished athlete, marathon runner, and a paramedic in West Yellowstone.

Bessmertnykh, Alexander

Alexander (Sasha) Bessmertnykh was the Soviet Union’s ambassador to the United States from 1990 to 1991 and the last foreign minister of the U.S.S.R. A close ally of President Mikhail Gorbachev, he was deeply involved in shaping Russia’s diplomatic policy, as well as its internal politics. Widely known and respected for his sound judgment, open-mindedness, and deep knowledge of Russian and world affairs, he currently is in charge of a think tank dealing with global and domestic policies. He speaks fluent English and is the author of many articles on diplomacy, strategic and military matters, and the political situation in Russia.

Billington, James

James Hadley Billington has been The Librarian of Congress since September 1987. Educated at Princeton University (1950) and Oxford (1953), he was a professor of history at Princeton from 1964 to 1973. Billington is the author the classic cultural history, The Icon and the Axe (1966); The Face of Russia (1998), a companion book to his PBS series of the same name; and many other books. In 1988 he accompanied President Ronald Reagan to the Soviet Summit in Moscow. He is the founder and chairman of the Open World Leadership Center, which has brought 15,000 young political leaders from Russia, Ukraine, and other successor states to the U.S., and has been chairman of the board that administers the Fulbright Exchange Program worldwide. The recipient of 40 honorary doctorates and 11 foreign state decorations, Billington is currently consultant to President Medvedev of Russia on a new Russian library system. He is the founder of the World Digital Library program, which has put online cultural treasures from all 192 countries in UNESCO.

Boles, John

John Boles holds the William Pettus Hobby Chair of American History at Rice University, where he has been on the faculty since 1981. Educated at Rice and the University of Virginia, Dr. Boles has written or edited twenty books and is editor of The Journal of Southern History. In addition to being a distinguished historian and an award-winning teacher, he is an experienced and popular study leader. On this trip, John’s passion for American history will be evident as he leads interesting discussions and shares his in-depth knowledge of this crucial leg of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In particular, he will delve into why President Thomas Jefferson commissioned this exploratory expedition, what was known about the American West at that time, and the complicated relations between the Corps and Native Americans. He will also highlight special features of their journey—their hardships, courage, and fortitude—as well as the incredible leadership of Lewis and Clark themselves.

Brazauskas, Algirdas Mykolas

Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas is former prime minister and former president of Lithuania. Under his leadership, the Communist Party of Lithuania supported the Lithuanian independence movement, broke away from the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and transformed itself into the social-democratic Lithuanian Democratic Labor Party (now called the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party). Named acting president of Lithuania in November 1991, he won the subsequent presidential election and served until February 25, 1998. He was appointed prime minister on July 3, 2001, by Parliament and served for five years.

Brewer, Gary

Garry Brewer ’70 PhD rejoined the Yale faculty in 2001 as the Frederick K. Weyerhaeuser Professor of Resource Policy and Management, a joint appointment at the School of Management and the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. He previously taught at Yale from 1974 to 1991 but left to become dean of the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources and Environment. Subsequently, he served as dean of the University of California at Berkeley Extension, as well as professor of environmental policy and management in Berkeley’s Energy and Resources Group. The author of numerous publications, Professor Brewer has written about organizational complexity and behavior, computer applications to social and national security problems, political and economic development, strategic planning, environmental management, and resource matters.

His association with Southeast Asia began with a tour of duty as a naval officer in 1964-66 and continued as both a Yale graduate student in Southeast Asia Studies and as a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency fellow in 1966-68. After a lengthy hiatus until 1995, he returned to the area where he consulted extensively for the Thai Ministry of Education. Professor Brewer has participated in many alumni programs and earns praise for his clarity, insights, and humor.

Bush, George

Prior to being elected the 41st President of the United States in 1988, George H.W. Bush served in a number of senior-level positions involving international relations, including U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (1971), Chief of the U.S. Liaison Office in China (1975), and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (1976). He first became involved in China in the 1970s, when he worked to strengthen Sino-U.S. relations during an era of market reforms and loosening of Communist power in China. In the late 1980s, Bush presided over the presidency as China took center stage due to issues with Taiwan and the turbulent Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. Relations between the U.S. and China have been a continued priority for Bush well past the presidency: he has now visited China more than fifteen times and has collaborated on several U.S./China. Bush joins the program March 7–11.

Caccone, Gisella

Gisella Caccone is a lecturer at Yale, and senior research scientist in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. She leads research in the Galápagos on giant tortoises and iguanas, as well as efforts to build local research capacity. She will discuss new initiatives in these areas and how modern genetic technology has influenced efforts to preserve biodiversity.

Carpinisan, Mariana

Mariana Carpinisan was born in Romania and educated in France, Italy, and the U.S. As former Assistant Curator with the Cleveland Museum of Art, she organized exhibitions, planned educational programs, and developed an interdisciplinary curriculum of art and music for organizations such as the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Toronto Symphony. Mariana has taught at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland and is currently an adjunct professor at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. In addition to her work as an art history consultant and art critic, she conducts seminars and lectures for the Smithsonian Resident Associate Program. Over the past six years, Mariana has served as study leader for more than forty study tours, including a variety of programs in Russia.

Cerf, Vinton G.

Vinton G. Cerf has served as vice president and chief Internet evangelist for Google since October 2005. In this role, he is responsible for identifying new enabling technologies to support the development of advanced, Internet-based products and services from Google. Widely known as one of the “Fathers of the Internet,” Cerf is the co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the Internet. Cerf and his colleague, Robert E. Kahn, received the U.S. National Medal of Technology in 1997 for founding and developing the Internet; the 2004 ACM Alan M. Turing award (sometimes called the “Nobel Prize of Computer Science”) for their work on the Internet protocols; the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005; and the prestigious Japan Prize in 2008. Former senior vice president of technology strategy for MCI, Cerf was responsible for helping to guide corporate strategy development from the technical perspective. Previously, Cerf served as MCI’s senior vice president of Architecture and Technology. Cerf is an expert on the global future of the Internet and will discuss the use of modern social networking technologies areas visited in this program.

Chin, Annping

Annping Chin is a leading historian and expert on Confucianism, Taoism, and the Chinese intellectual tradition. Born in Taiwan to a mainland Chinese family, Chin emigrated with her family to the U.S. in the early 1960s and eventually earned a PhD in Chinese thought from Columbia University. Chin teaches history at Yale and is the author of several books on China, including Children of China: Voices from Recent Years and Four Sisters of Hofei. She has also collaborated with Jonathan Spence on Chinese Century: A Photographic History of the Last Hundred Years.

Cline, Diane

Diane Cline has taught Greek and Roman history and archaeology for more than 13 years and is currently a professorial lecturer at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. While working on her dissertation at Princeton, she was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in Greece, where she researched art and archaeology for three years. She has worked on excavations in Greece and Israel and appears regularly on the History Channel and A&E.

Coley, Kitty

Kitty Coley is a geologist, naturalist, and avid birder who serves as a consultant to National Geographic magazine for articles related to her expertise and has led expeditions for National Geographic for more than 8 years. She worked as a geologist for 15 years before becoming involved full-time in expedition travel. Through her work, she has spent extensive time in remote rain forests and rugged geologic settings around the world.
